Subject: Is Higher Education Right For Me?

Date: October 13th, 2021

College is a lot of time, dedication, work, money, and stress, you’re right. It’s all of those things and more. That’s why it’s a good idea to figure out if higher education is the right path for you. During my senior year of high school, college was the last thing on my mind. I didn’t know what I wanted as a career, when I wanted to go to school, how I was going to pay for school, or if I even wanted to continue my education in the first place. So against everyone’s advice, I took a gap year. I needed this year to look for a niche of my own, to find something I was honestly passionate about, and that is just what I ended up doing.

Over my gap year, I volunteered as an AmeriCorps with a program that worked with low income and minority elementary school students to build academic skills and increase opportunities. The most rewarding parts of my days were helping kids figure out the tougher feelings which were often holding them back from success, and then seeing them thrive in a school setting. Not only was I helping these kids succeed in that moment, but I was watching them continue to use the coping skills to get around everyday struggles all by themselves. This was the something I was honestly passionate about. And the next step towards continuing of building my newly found passion was make my way towards an undergraduate degree.

It turns out all I needed to do was find something to motivate me to give up that time and money, and take on all the stress and work of school. Even now, if I ever need to refocus… I try and remember what I’m doing this all for.
